ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

Australia21 has developed a strategy that can rebuild the nation’s environmental infrastructure, a task just as important to Australia’s future as national defence or climate change.

Our national wellbeing depends on the services provided by complex ecosystems. These benefits include food, fuel and fibre as well as the vital services such as water flows, nutrient cycling and biomass production that underpin all our production systems and lifestyles. Yet our actions are putting them under extreme pressure. Australia21 seeks to bridge the gap between research and policy to create new ‘frameworks of understanding’ that can be applied to the development of public, corporate and community policy outcomes.

Australia21 has developed a strategy that can rebuild the nation’s environmental infrastructure, a task just as important to Australia’s future as national defence or climate change. Work has begun on many ecosystem services projects but the effort is fragmented. The benefits of national coordination through a world-leading ecosystem services framework would be immense. Australia21’s Ecosystem

Services Strategy has the potential to provide for ecological sustainability, give future direction to rural industries and communities and introduce new options for indigenous Australians.
